Hail to the Strawberry
The month of May marks the beginning of fresh, local produce in the Shenandoah Valley and that means strawberries – those delectable ruby nuggets. To kick off the strawberry season, West Oaks Farm Market of Winchester will host its inaugural Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 1, with a lineup of food, fun, and entertainment.
From 9am to 6pm, roam three acres and pick your own strawberries, enjoy a hayride and turn the kids loose in the tractor bounce house. Musical duo Chris Gray & Whitney Dick will take the stage at 11am followed by the ever-popular Blue Ridge Rain at 2pm.
In addition to strawberry treats, you’ll find local food vendors and chicken dinners from Hylton Clark Bear Mtn. Garden BBQ. Satisfy your sweet tooth with kettle corn or hand dipped/hand rolled ice cream. Lunch and dinner are also available from the farm’s Market Deli & Café. Looking for an adult beverage? Then try the strawberry wine or cider.
After lunch, stop by the farm’s store and see the selection of flowers, flags, wreaths, bird houses, and homemade soaps and candles. Looking for a present for a “picky” friend? Why not consider a West Oaks Farm gift certificate – a timely gift for the pick-your-own season.
Still up for more fun after a day of picking and playing at West Oaks? On the way home, enjoy a scrumptious dinner at nearby Mackintosh Fruit Farm off Route 7 in neighboring Clark County. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children. Dinner will be served 7-9pm.
