VA Herb Festival Ready to Wow Again in 2016

On June 11th and 12th families and all ages are welcome to attend the 8th annual Virginia Herb Festival of the Sunflower Cottage Herb Farm and Backroom Brewery of Middletown, Virginia. This exciting festival consists of demonstrations from head chefs and herb specialists, an astounding selection of craft beer, door prize opportunities, events for kids, and a variety of vendors all in two awesome days!

Founded in 2009 by Sunflower Cottage’s own Billie Clifton, the festival grows and gains followers by the hundreds every year. This year, Billie hopes that the VA Herb Fest would continue to provide fun and entertainment for all ages that centers around the agrarian lifestyle and delight in herbs.

For the Adults:

  • Herb plants are clearance prices

Sunflower Cottage offers all their plants in the greenhouses at  for 50% off! This special gives you the opportunity to build your own full tray of herbs for only $40, regular price $60-$75. Each attendee will be registered in door prize giveaways. The door prizes include a large herb garden, a large herbal basket, bird feeders, bat houses and more.

There are demonstrations every hour – here are three:

  • Herbal Beer Tasting

    Backroom Brewery plans to unveil 12 magnificent craft beers at the festival.

Backroom Brewery has been working hard on designing new beers to be premiered at the 2016 festival! “With the birth of our Backroom Brewery in 2014, we became a craft beer event,”said Billie. This year, Backroom Brewery features a tasting of 12 new artisan beers in addition to their extensive line-up of beers always on tap. Among the creations so far are:
Grenadine Wheat Beer, Cilantro IPA, Chamomile Wheat Beer, and Lavender Honey Blonde Ale; all including the Sunflower Cottage’s herbs! All of these wonderful new
brews will be available for tasting on Saturday, June 11 at 2:00. Tickets for the Herbal Beer tasting are $20 and will sell out early.  So don’t wait. Arrive early and purchase your ticket right away.

  • Herbal Remedies and Aroma Therapy 101

These exciting demonstrations by Sondra Johnson of Natures Common Scents and Shana Evans of Young Living showcases herbal skin care and other natural herbal practices for enhanced health. Learn what herbs and essential oils in particular are soothing for cuts and burns, moisturizer and aromatherapy.

  • Hops and Growing Practices

Backroom Brewery has opened their brewery to the public of the Virginia Herb Festival  for a tour and Small Batch Brewing Demonstration. The brewery takes pride in it’s craft creations and how cool would it be to actually see them make it?! This particular tour is on Sunday from 1 to 4pm.

For the Younger Folks:

  • Demonstration After Demonstration

Kids and their families can enjoy watching chefs and herb specialists create  foodie masterpieces by incorporating the herbs of Sunflower Cottage.

-Chef Justin of Redbook Restaurant at the Hillbrook Inn & Spa, plans to demonstrate pickling, a historical method used to expand the lifespan of food, and basic cooking with herbs under the demonstration tent.

Chef Erik of Magnolia’s at the Mill will demonstrate how to create and use herbal pestos to enhance any fine meal.

-Chef Blair Dolinar,  Co-Owner of Nibblins, will be show you how to make homemade fudge.

-Chef Shana Avila of EM Bake will be demonstrating Herbal Pastries.

-Chef Michelle Miller of Panache Catering will demonstrate fresh herbal salads and canapes with edible flowers.

All demonstrations are instructive and geared towards showing all attendees how easy it is to incorporate herbs in your food and drink at home.

  • Spin to Win Wheel from Kids Trail

Take a spin on the kids wheel to receive an awesome prize from the Shenandoah Valley Kids Trail and Go Blue Ridge Travel! Meet the Bucket’s Buddies and get inspired to join Bucket on her Kids Trail adventure!

  • Roam Free in the Giant Field

While the parents are away, the kids can play! (With parent’s permission, of course.) The Virginia Herb Festival sits on a massive field big enough for tag, red light green light, duck duck goose and more! Grab your friends and come play!

If the family gets hungry or wants to shop around a little, vendors will be providing scrumptious food, remedies for the soul,  and fun knick knacks. Some vendors include:

The Virginia Herb Festival showcases the variety of herbs, each unique in their own way and how they are used in food, beer, and everyday lifestyles.  Admission is $5.00 per person and children age 12 and under, accompanied by an adult, are free. The admission charge is good for both days and after you are in, all programs are free.
