Strawberries

Strawberries are the perfect fruit for you and your family to eat during the summer. They are full of many health benefits, like being an excellent source of Vitamin C which boosts your immunity and is a powerful antioxidant.  They also promote eye health, can help prevent wrinkles, fight off bad cholesterol, regulate blood pressure, and boost your fiber intake. Did I also mention they’re naturally low calorie, fat-free, and low in sodium and sugar?

Here in the valley, strawberry season is upon us (although about 3 weeks late this year since we’ve had some cold weather!). There are many ways for you and your family to enjoy this nutritious fruit!

First up, why not gather some fresh, locally grown strawberries at Mackintosh Fruit Farm? Bring your family here to enjoy picking strawberries by hand or just purchase at their store. Then bring them home to enjoy as a sweet treat or make delicious recipes out of! From strawberry butter and jam to pies, cakes, and even pizza, the possibilities are endless of what you can make with this superfruit! The Virginia Department of Agriculture has these recipe ideas and more for you to try out here.

Next, go celebrate this year’s strawberry harvest with the family at a festival! Downtown Harrisonburg will be hosting its annual Strawberry Festival on May 20 from 11 am to 5 pm, which is sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. Activities for the kids will include face painting, balloon animals, dunk tank, and more. There will also be live music and, you guessed it, strawberry treats to indulge in!

Just one week later will be Delaplane’s Strawberry Festival on May 27 – 28 from 10 am to 5pm each day. Come bring your whole family to this event during Memorial Day weekend where you can enjoy hayrides, dancing, storytelling, crafts, a petting farm, Appalachian Trail hikes, face painting, cake walking, and more. And of course, there will be fresh strawberries available too!

However you and your family decide to spend your summer, don’t forget to include some strawberries!
