In the Blue Ridge northern Shenandoah Valley, three properties come to mind… the Blackthorne Inn and Restaurant in Upperville, Virginia, the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and the Hillbrook Inn in Charles Town, West Virginia. All three inns are owned by families working together – the O’Connor, the Asam, and the Zanella families.
Nestled in the valley just below Paris, Mountain in Virginia, the O’Connor family opened the Blackthorne Inn in 2007 having emigrated from Ireland in 1980. The O’Connor family’s love of music as is true of the Irish culture is showcased every Friday and Saturday night. Offering a “one stop shop”, the inn is unique in that beside the eight bedrooms in the main house, there are cabins scattered around the hillside behind the inn. The inn’s Irish specialties include Irish Gnocchi (thin cut potatoes), Fish and Chips, and Shepherd Pie. Chef Shane O’Connor adds an American fusion to the menu. The Blackthorne Inn also caters.
