Continuing our series of we would like to shift the focus to historic properties with lodging and accommodations for your guests. Particularly our focus will be on three properties which have strong European influence. For many brides and grooms, the ‘old country’ represents history and romantic legends so it only seems appropriate that some soon to be wed couples would look to properties with European influence.

One way to evaluate a resort prior to booking it is to go and visit for a ‘romantic getaway’.

In the Blue Ridge northern Shenandoah Valley, three properties come to mind… the Blackthorne Inn and Restaurant in Upperville, Virginia, the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and the Hillbrook Inn in Charles Town, West Virginia. All three inns are owned by families working together – the O’Connor, the Asam, and the Zanella families.

Nestled in the valley just below Paris, Mountain in Virginia, the O’Connor family opened the Blackthorne Inn in 2007 having emigrated from Ireland in 1980. The O’Connor family’s love of music  as is true of the Irish culture is showcased every Friday and Saturday night.  Offering a “one stop shop”, the inn is unique in that beside the eight bedrooms in the main house, there are cabins scattered around the hillside behind the inn.  The inn’s Irish specialties  include Irish Gnocchi (thin cut potatoes), Fish and Chips, and Shepherd Pie. Chef Shane O’Connor adds an American fusion to the menu. The Blackthorne Inn also caters. If you would like to have your wedding reception at the Inn you have a choice of an inside ballroom for up to 125 guests with a deck overlooking the large pond filled with water lilies or you can also do a tent for the largest weddings.   $$ for wedding reception. The Blackthorne Inn is close to Middleburg, Virginia great for shopping and enjoying horse hunt country.

The Bavarian Inn is a romantic country chalet offering European elegance and authentic Bavarian cuisine from its scenic location overlooking the Potomac River. The charming and historic inn is owned by the Asam family, who maintain the highest standard in hospitality, gourmet dining, and guest comfort. The 72 luxuriously appointed rooms feature gas fireplaces and whirlpool baths among their amenities. Located in the beautiful village of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, one can combine the uniqueness of the German Village of Shepherdstown to enhance your European experience.  DC likes to refer to Shepherdstown’s lifestyle as their Greenwich Village of DC but in the hills of West Virginia.  Shepherdstown is a high tourist attraction making the weekends busy and weeks quiet once the tourists have gone back home.  The Bavarian Inn can hold weddings inside one of their ballrooms for up to 125. They have had brides rent the entire resort for weddings above the 200 plus mark.  $$ for wedding receptions.  They are also a beautiful choice for the small wedding client with a reception occurring on the roof overlooking the Potomac River. The Bavarian Inn has proudly won many awards, including a AAA Four Diamond and Wine Spectator’s “Best of” Award of Excellence.”

Picture a European style country house hotel cascading down a limestone ridge on eight levels, with 2000 panes of glass flooding the interior with light. Imagine the rich patina of old wood, the gleam of polished brass, the deep jewel tones of oriental carpets. “Imagine, too, Flemish oils, African masks, dramatic contemporary sculpture, and a library at our West Virginia Inn and Restaurant lined with books. Add the flicker of candles and the warmth of a fire. A love seat. An intimate table for two. A quiet place to be alone together. Gardens bursting with color, a meandering stream and ducks on the pond. And dinner. Three, Five or Seven spectacular courses. A truly Romantic Getaway in West Virginia. Sophisticated yet unpretentious. Elegant and eclectic!”

Hillbrook Inn have created a special market for itself by appealing to Elopement Brides and Grooms. “We have created an intimate & elegant elopement package for those who do not want to deal with the extreme stress and expense of a large wedding, but still want those storybook memories & traditional amenities!” said Carissa Zanella. co-owner of the Hillbrook Inn. The Hillbrook Inn also is perfect for large weddings which are tented on the lawns behind the manor house. $$$ for wedding receptions.  Guest rooms—with a cosmopolitan décor, and some with wooded views, fireplace, or whirlpool tub—are exquisite.”Washingtonian Magazine
