“The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is very excited about this continued series of films focused on families.  These screenings encourage everyone from Mom and Dad, brother and sister, to discuss afterwards and inspire future cinephiles within our community.  OCTOBER SKY is a great fit as it based on a best-selling book about a boy from West Virginia who builds his own rocket.  We will have some guest speakers for this screening and fans of HIDDEN FIGURES will love this inspiring story.”

This month’s latest installment of Super 8 Family Film Club features October Sky, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam, Jr. With a setting like Coalwood, West Virginia, one doesn’t have to dig too deep to see where the movie’s internal industrial conflicts lie – the coal mining industry. Homer Hickam, Jr. witnesses Sputnik shoot across the sky one October night, and it completely changes his world forever. He doesn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps as mine superintendent – he wants to build and launch his own homemade rockets! Through the film’s series of failures and successes, it will inspire you and your family to reach for the stars!

Based on the memoir Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam, the author, who is portrayed in the film, goes on to earn an industrial engineering degree from Virginia Tech, serve in the Vietnam War, and finally go on to work for NASA. To celebrate the truly inspiring story of success after failure, the Shenandoah Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association will be co-hosting the event as well as providing guest speakers! They will be welcoming Samantha Riggins, Corps of Cadets’ museum curator, where she will then give a brief history of the Corps and the role that Hickam played.

With synopsis and event details out of the way, I’m sure you’re dying to know when all of this wonderful stuff will be happening. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 25th at the Alamo Drafthouse! The event is set to start at 11am. We encourage families and singles alike to attend as it will prove, yet again, to be a wonderful experience!

We’ll see you there!
