Shepherdstown is a village that lives and breathes music. One cannot visit on a weekend and not hear music all over the town from the lawns of the residents to the outdoor bars on German Street. Many locals play in bands thru out the valley. Some actually go national like Christian Lopez.

This past June, my friend from college Brittany and I headed over to Shepherdstown for Shepherdstown Street Fest. It was kind of strange being back in Shepherdstown after not being there since 2014 and having graduated from Shepherd five years ago. On arrival we parked at the campus wellness center and took a stroll down memory lane across the Shepherd campus to German Street. A lot has changed since attending school there, it was fun seeing my old dorms and the art buildings where I spent so much time as a student.
I had never been to Street Fest so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. From the four way stop at the top of German St. down to Princess street was blocked off and lined on both sides with booths. After walking around and seeing all of the beautiful art displayed by the artisans at the booths and grabbing a bite to eat at Maria’s Taqueria (which I have been craving for a while), it was time to get down to the music.
I had been hearing about Holy Ghost Tent Revival for years but never had the chance to see them live until now. They were rocking out on the main stage when we got there and had the crowd on their feet dancing the whole time. The stages were placed right in the center of everything so even if you were walking around looking at the booths you could still hear the music really well so of course we had to jam down the street as we walked. I’m so glad I finally got to see Holy Ghost Tent Revival live, I will definitely be seeing them again.
We then headed back to the Library Stage and heard a few songs from A Faster Buffalo. I had never heard of this band but really enjoyed their set. They had a great energy about them.
Next up I went over to catch up with Christian Lopez (Christian Lopez Band) before their headlining set. Before interviewing Christian a few months ago (interview here) I had never really listened to CLB but ever since have become a big fan. I think the whole town might have shown up for their set and I was lucky to get right up front and enjoy the show because I was super excited to finally see them live. It’s always nice when a local band can come back and put on a great show for their hometown crowd.
Overall, Shepherdstown Street fest was a huge success and I had an absolute blast. It was really nice to be back in Shepherdstown, on my old stomping grounds and to see all my old hangouts, run into old friends I hadn’t seen in years, see some gorgeous artwork, and hear some really great music from several wonderful bands.
If you are planning a trip for next summer, make sure you consider this small German town and this great music festival.
