July is the summer month in the valley when one really understands what hot is.  With temperatures reaching the 90‘s and Virginia-West Virginia’s wonderful southern humidity one has two choices – stay inside in the cool air-conditioning or brave the hot outdoors by looking for fun events.  Here is a list of July’s fun schedule of events for adults and kids just a tankful outside of DC.

Culinary Happenings and Events

If you have never been to a U Pick Farm, you are missing out getting fresh fruit and vegetables straight off the vine. Plus, you can find more locally grown crops.  Ever heard of Brambles?  Lori MacKintosh of MacKintosh Fruit Farm saids, “A Bramble is any rough (usually wild) tangled prickly shrub, specifically a blackberry or raspberry bush, or any hybrid of similar appearance, with thorny stems.”

At the Bluemont BBQ Bash this year ‘amateurs’ can bring their grills in on Sunday and compete in the Backyard BBQ Competition. The KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) competitors who competed on Saturday will be there to give you advice but not share their secrets. This takes a lot of the heat off and allows local BBQ lovers to get their feet wet with out sinking from the pressure of a national contest. Email today to learn more.

The Bluemont BBQ Bash beings on Friday with a meet and greet at Bluemont Vineyard. All the KCBS Competitors will be there.  Remember last year’s Bluemont winner “3 Eyz BBQ” won the national competition and is back this year to claim his crown again. On Saturday, the People’s Choice Competition is a bit more light hearted than the actual competition and will benefit the Boulder Crest Retreat for wounded warriors.  VIP and guests have the opportunity to enjoy 5 samples of BBQ and rank their favorite to award the People’s Choice Crown. Get tickets here.

Theater in the Valley

The valley is fortunate to have two theater festivals for the summer.  Very opposite in subject manner, the Contemporary American Theater is on its 23rd season Festival and the Shenandoah Summer Music Festival is celebrating thirty years. Both use equity actors in their plays and supplement with students from their universities.

The Contemporary American Theater Festival produces new American theatre and is only for the month of July beginning on the 5th and ending on the 28th.  Contemporary themed subject manner, this is an adult only theater festival. There is a five play repertory and features three world premieres. Pick your favorites or for the dye heart contemporary-theme enthusiast buy the package and see them all.
