Meet the Host
A charter member of Taste of Blue Ridge and a firm believer of the locally sourced movement, the romantic and historic Hillbrook Inn’s owners, Chris and Carissa Zanella, have worked closely to pin all the details for this year’s annual Root to Table dinner. If you know Carissa, then you know that she’s a hard worker, passionate about what she does, and completely on top of her game. The Hillbrook Inn has never been in better hands, and under their management, has flourished. We couldn’t imagine a better setting for our second annual Root to Table and are so excited to be back at this wonderful West Virginia destination.
The Hillbrook Inn has a long history dating back to 1748. Settled on 18 acres of charming wooded land, the area was originally owned by George Washington himself!
Hillbrook Inn was built as a private home by Brigadier General Frank E. Bamford, at the height of the roaring 20’s on land George Washington once owned and farmed. Timbers and stone from the Locke Farm, which occupied the site in the 1800s, were used in the construction. The original spring house provided Hillbrook with water up until 2005 when the house was switched to a well.
General Bamford modeled Hillbrook after an inn he loved in Normandy, where he stayed after the First World War. So it especially fitting that Hillbrook should now be a country inn in the European tradition, graciously refurbished by the Carroll’s, who acquired the property in 1984. The Zanella family has carried on that style and tradition since their purchase of Hillbrook in 2004.
An ideal destination for weddings, elopements, and honeymoons, Hillbrook Inn and Spa is the perfect setting for you and that special someone. This is one experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
