June has its own specific sound. Lawn mowers mowing, burgers and hot dogs sizzling on the grill, that first big cannonball splash into the pool, followed by the sound of a warm summer breeze creaking through the trees and the crickets chirping. Summer is right around the corner, can you hear it?

The weather so far this late spring has been quite dramatic. From weeks of rain speckled with days of sunshine, to chilly, foggy mornings that make you want to hit snooze over and over. Parents have it the worst they have little ones to keep entertained on top of dealing with a lack of vitamin D! Don’t worry. If you’re looking for fun things to do in June in the Shenandoah Valley, the VA Kids Trail has got you covered! From drive-in movie theaters to u-pick farms, learning about fresh ingredients and butterfly gardens, you’ll be surprised at how much is available right in your back yard. Go ahead and start planning your June itinerary we’ll keep our fingers crossed for sunshine!

Sunny Farm Fun

June family fun at Mackintosh

This family owned farm, located in Berryville, Virginia, provides the perfect excuse to ride atop dad’s shoulders. Picking your own produce at Mackintosh Fruit Farm is an important experience to share with your kids. When a child is able to pick a fresh strawberry from the vine, or a peach from a tree, they’re able to learn while having fun. It’s every parents hope to instill humbleness and gratefulness in their child early on, and what better way to do so than at a farm? Let them get their hands dirty and see the grueling process nature undergoes to produce just one piece of fruit, let alone large batches.

June family fun petting cows at Mt. Crawford

This getaway experience is one for the books. Mt. Crawford Creamery allows you to not only pet their cows, but see how all of their products are made. Schedule a tour to get up close and personal at this charming farm, where you’ll learn the history of the farm, get to see the milking parlor, pet the baby calves, and sample their homemade products! Again, this allows your kids to tap into that appreciation for the fresh products they get to eat while having a blast. (And admit it, mom. You want to pet the baby cows, too!)

Back Home on the Farm has so many activities you and the little ones can do, from the Spring season all the way until the end of Fall. June is Butterfly Garden season at this awesome location, which allows you to observe all kinds of beautiful butterflies in their natural state. If you’re lucky, one may even decide to perch on you!

If you wanted to make a day out of the trip, Back Home even hosts country tea parties and snacks. Paired with their tea, you’ll find menu items like fresh fruit compote, cucumber sandwiches, swiss bacon quiche, and BLT canapés with garnish, all with the most fresh and locally sourced ingredients that can be found in Harrisonburg. Back Home hosts country teas all year long – you can check out the Spring/Summer tea time schedule here.

June family fun Nibblins kids cooking classes

Nibblins is the ultimate location to get your little ones cooking! Conveniently located in Winchester, Virginia, with an abundance of options this summer, classes are taught by experienced and caring chefs with children of their own.
