Need a break from the everyday routine? Resorts, inns, and hotels – check out these seven Blue Ridge getaways and get going!
Blue Ridge Getaways
Blue Ridge getaways include resorts chocked with activities, peaceful inns, and “home bases” with nearby attractions. Be sure to check each property’s website for special packages and discounts.
If you just want to get there and stay there, then these two resorts will keep you busy with a range of pursuits. While there are nearby attractions, there’s so much to do, you may not want to leave the property.
Located just to the east of the Blue Ridge is Lansdowne Resort in Loudoun County, Virginia’s wine country. And you’re less than an hour from sightseeing in Washington, DC.
Don’t feel like driving into DC? How about driving a golf ball? Lansdowne has three courses, including the 9-hole Greg Norman Sharkbite – great for both beginners and experienced players. And from April through October, play Foot Golf – fun for everyone!
Feel more comfortable with a racket than a club? Lansdowne has tennis and pickleball courts. Make a splash in one of the pools or hot tubs while the kids enjoy the waterslide. And connect with nature fishing, kayaking and exploring along the Potomac River.
After a busy day, take time for a relaxing spa treatment, followed by a delicious meal. Piedmont’s serves locally inspired Virginia cuisine. Cotton and Rye takes culinary cues from historic signature dishes, while Riverside Hearth offers a bountiful buffet. Lansdowne serves as a host for Taste of Blue Ridge special events, so mark your calendar for the October 4 Fall inspired Glamping Dinner.
Family Friendly Accommodations
Four season Massanutten Resort is in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley just outside Harrisonburg. No matter the time of year, this family-friendly destination delivers. From hotel rooms to villas, there are both mountain and valley accommodations.
Winter action includes skiing, snowboarding, tubing and ice skating. Warmer weather finds golf on two courses. There’s also FlingGolf where golf and lacrosse are combined. During summer, Massanutten is known for its water parks. Before the snow flies, cyclists enjoy the bike park (with its own beginner area) and take it cross country on the mountain’s western slope.
If you’re still looking for fun, try the escape rooms and virtual reality or visit Stonewall Terrace Recreation Center for bumper cars, go karts and the bungee dome. There’s also hiking, swimming, tennis, and horseback riding.
Because of its family focus, dining is casual at Massanutten. Enjoy live music at the Camp Fire Grill or a frosty brew at the Base Camp. The resort does offer fine dining on Tuesdays with a four-course meal at the conference center.
West Virginia Inns
If you want something more laid back, consider a trip just across the river to West Virginia and these two wonderful inns.
Looking for a romantic Blue Ridge getaway? Then take a look at Hillbrook Inn & Spa near Harper’s Ferry. Luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and spa services await. The Gatehouse Spa at Hillbrook offers a half dozen packages, including the “Couples Passion.” Enjoy 90 minute massages along with keratin hand and foot treatments.
Feel the need to get off property? Ask about Hillbrook’s chauffeur driven winery tours. And once you return, settle in for a delicious gourmet dinner and wine pairing at Redbook Restaurant. Like Lansdowne, Hillbrook also hosts Taste of Blue Ridge events and there’s one August 23 at the inn’s Hawthorne Estate.
In nearby Shepherdstown is the elegant Bavarian Inn Resort & Brewing Company. This historic inn has some modern touches with an infinity pool and Bavarian Brothers Brewery. Guests enjoy tennis, basketball and bocce courts, along with a fitness room and fire pits. The C&O Canal, as well as bike and boat rentals are within walking distance. Guests also have complimentary access to Shepherd University’s Wellness Center.
The inn offers fine formal dining in the Greystone Manor with German and American cuisine. And for more casual fare, try the European pub inspired Rathskeller or the Bavarian Brothers Brew Pub. There’s also casual dining on the patio and terrace.
“Home Base” Lodging for Blue Ridge Getaways
With so much to see and do in the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley, these three hotels make great “home bases” for adventure.
Located in the heart of historic Winchester, the George Washington Hotel has 90 rooms and suites, lounge with live music, and full service restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s an on site spa and the indoor pool is modeled after a Roman bath house. Historic attractions are just steps away.
Another Winchester “home base” is family-friendly Country Inn & Suites minutes from Kearnstown Battlefield. Rooms and suites are available and there’s an indoor pool along with a fitness center and picnic area. Each morning the hotel serves a complimentary buffet breakfast.
Just south of Winchester is the Holiday Inn & Suites Blue Ridge Shadows located adjacent to Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Course. The scenic Skyline Drive is just minutes away. The hotel has a heated indoor pool and whirlpool, sundeck overlooking the golf course and full service restaurant.
