It is such a delicious time of year when fresh foods are all around us. Eating healthy is an easy option at a convenient stop at a local farmers market. A wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, and even freshly prepared foods are offered at area stores  and stands.

For the next few months, menus can include a wide variety of berries, green vegetables, corn on the cob, tomatoes and much more.  Just be vigilant of when the items are ready for picking or buying and your meals will fly off the table.

From the top of the Shenandoah Valley to southern and eastern points, growers  display their wares in various styles and venues.  They are always ready to talk about what is in season and what will be in season.  Don’t miss out on this amazing time of year.

Farmers Markets | Go Blue Ridge TravelOld Town Winchester  hosts a farmers market   in the Taylor Pavilion on the pedestrian mall from May to October. Vendors from a 60-mile radius take part in the market Saturday mornings,  offering a myriad of products from farmers and some of the shops on the mall.  For more information, visit  oldtownwinchesterva.com.

Close by on the parking lot of Winchester Little Theatre, 315 W. Boscawen St., Freight Station Farmers Market hosts a  producers-only market Tuesday, Friday and Saturday with a collection of farmers and merchants offering prepared foods as well as those to take home and cook.  No stranger to the area, the market has been serving the Shenandoah Valley for more than a decade. Winchester also is the home of West Oaks Farm Market, 1107 Cedar Creek Grade. It is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The market also offers pick your own, depending on the season.  Visit westoaksfarm-market.com

Downtown Berryville has hosted the Clarke County Farmers Market  at 20 S. Church St. for more than a decade. It is open Saturdays May to October and calls itself a staple in the community on its web page, clarkecountyfarmersmarket.com. Vendors are from Clarke County and offer its citizen an outlet to buy directly from local farmers.

 

 U Pick Farms | Go Blue Ridge Travel Mackintosh Fruit Farm is a family owned pick-your-own farm, nestled in the  Northern Shenandoah Valley in Clarke County.  It is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Mount Airy Farm Market, also in Clarke County, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The market offers home delivery of produce, meats and other items.  Pre-order food by 3 p.m. the day before  and the delivery will come the next day. Visit mountairymarket.com.

Also in Clarke County, Nalls Farm Market, 4869 Harry Byrd Highway, Berryville, is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through the end of the year.  The market offers produce, baked goods, plants and more. Visit nallsfarmmarket.com.

Shen-Val Farm Market, White Post, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and is owned by the McDonald family. The market answers all produce, bakery, beef, and greenhouse needs.  Visit  Shen-Val Farm on  Facebook.

In Frederick County, Shawnee Springs Market, Cross Junction,  is open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily year-round. The market is one of the oldest farm markets in the northern Virginia area and is owned by  the Whitacre family.  Visit shawneesprings.com.

In Shenandoah County, Woodbine Farm Market, 5199 John Marshall Highway, Strasburg, is open daily. This year, it is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Visit woodbinefarmmarket.com.

The Loudoun Valley Homegrown  Markets Cooperative  operates five summer markets. Two are on Saturdays (Ashburn and Leesburg), two on Sundays (Cascades and Brambleton) and one on Wednesdays in Leesburg. Visit loudounfarmersmarket.org.
