We’re now well into August, and with July’s chaotic rainstorms, everyone’s probably had a little dose of cabin fever thrust upon them. For families with young children, being stuck indoors can be a big undertaking. While some kids are perfectly fine indoors building a puzzle or playing a video game, others have tons of energy and are bouncing off the walls, looking for a fun activity to do! August demands that a little family fun takes place before school starts back up, so now’s your last chance to make the most out of summer with these activities that every kid will love!
Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park (Luray)
Waterparks are always a good idea and a safe, family-friendly way to invest your money. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has over 20 amenities to pick and choose from, so we’d recommend making a weekend trip out of this one. From waterslides and pools to laser tag, arcades, mini golf, paddle boats, petting zoos and more, this place really does have it all! Yogi Bear goes the extra mile by making sure each week has a theme. For example, the week of August 13-19 will be Wild West, followed by Double Dare, and Labor Day after that. Running through fall, you can expect Halloween themes every weekend in October! For their full schedule of themes and events, click here!
*Suitable for kids of every age, and for adults who are looking for a relaxing weekend. This is your one stop shop for family fun!
The Family Drive In Theater
This one’s a no-brainer and a classic, if family fun is what you seek. If you haven’t been here yet, you need to book your tickets already! Movies are a great way to unwind with your family, and what better way to see one than in a timeless, drive-in setting? Say so long to cramped theaters, where you have to worry about if the baby might cry, reserved or even uncomfortable seating, and those chilly movie theater temperatures. Nestle into the trunk with the comforts of home – pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, whatever! – and enjoy a movie under the stars!
Stay tuned this fall season for tons of events happening at the Drive In! On August 31st, come out to enjoy Labor Day Weekend with their Dusk ‘Til Dawn Movie Marathon – a favorite amongst cinema lovers everywhere. Then, once pumpkin season kicks in, prepare for the spookiest month of the year with their Halloween Trunk or Treat Costume Party! Bounce houses, magicians, candy, and fun included.
Warm summer weather, delicious concession items, and a good film playing on the large projector screen will have your family entertained weekend after weekend, only at The Family Drive In Theater.
Harpers Ferry Adventure Center
We’re down to those final dog days of summer, where it’s insanely hot out and you’ve got school deadlines looming over your head. Relax! There’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors – more specifically, the Shenandoah Valley’s beautiful Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Harpers Ferry Adventure Center is your premier destination for summer river fun like tubing and rafting, and even more off-the-scenes adventuring via rope courses, ziplining, and cabins and camping sites.
Summer fun doesn’t (and shouldn’t) be over just yet. Make sure to capture every last ray of sunshine this August at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center, where excitement is guaranteed!
Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum
With school starting back soon, there’s no better time to jumpstart your child’s imagination than now. The Discovery Museum is the perfect place to do that. Featuring 7 different and unique exhibits that help your child learn about the world around them, education becomes synonymous with fun! Spark your kid’s creativity as they learn about culture through the Moccasin Trail, music through the Musical Garden, plants through the Pollinator Plaza, and so much more.
The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum also has programs that run through each month. Every third Saturday of the month, (meaning this Saturday, August 18th!) you can join the Museum for their “Stories Alive!“, where a narrator will present fascinating stories and narratives to your little ones. In “Art in Leo’s Corner” the building’s third floor takes center stage! This afternoon program is created by the artisan and varies from month to month, so keep an eye out for the next one!
We hope these family fun-centered destinations and activities will encourage you to get out there and seize what’s left of this hot, but beautiful summer weather. When it comes to being a kid, there’s no better place to grow, learn and have fun than right here in the Blue Ridge. We’ll see you out there!
