Monarchs, Back Swallowtails, Buckeyes, Painted Ladies, Fritillaries, Mourning Cloaks, Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies, and more! This is what is in store for you and your family when you stop by Back Home on the Farm in Harrisonburg, VA this summer!

123The Butterfly House at Back Home on the Farm has its Grand Opening on Saturday, June 18, and it is definitely a hidden treasure of the Blue Ridge that you must discover! Hundreds of butterflies will be released into the specially enclosed greenhouse, and butterfly experts will be standing by to answer any question that sparks your curiosity.

Chasing butterflies has always been one of mine, and Back Home on the Farm owner Lynn Hess’s, favorite summer memories. Experience the nostalgia of butterfly catching and share this joy with your children this summer at this family farm. Not only is this a beautiful experience, but an educational one as well! Learn about the butterflies’ life cycles, what plants they eat, and how to attract them to your flower gardens. And here’s a goBRT hint: Back Home on the Farm releases butterflies into the greenhouse often, so you can give the farm a call and see if you can be a part of that experience. The Butterfly House is truly one of a kind and will have your kids itching to come back!IMG_7930

Not only are the butterflies beautiful, but the greenhouse itself is a sight to be seen! The Hess Family has been meticulously decorating the greenhouse to create magnificent fairy gardens that are magical for all ages. The beauty is in the tiny details, from the fairy steps on the side of a tree to little fairy houses. If you are truly inspired, you can stop by the larger greenhouse to purchase all the supplies you’d need to create your own fairy garden!

In addition to the butterfly house, there are so many more activities on the farm that will ensure fun on the farm for the whole family! Kids can perform plays in the amphitheater as well as watch the pig races, parents can shop for fresh flowers in the large greenhouse or good treats in the country store, and grandparents will love the historical, handcrafted carousal that features different aspects of Virginia history. There is not a dull moment on this farm!
