Everyone seems to be rushing to the pool and the beach this time of year, but did you know that the rivers right here in the Valley offer tons of fun and exciting activities, too? No need to deal with the weekend beach traffic or overcrowded pools – head on over to the Harpers Ferry Adventure Center to explore a variety of river sports and have a blast!
Tubing is one of the best activities because it is great for the whole family! Flatwater tubing is perfect for those who are bringing the little ones along, because it allows for a relaxing, leisurely trip down the river. There is no need to worry about keeping up with one another or losing each other to the river – just sit back and float! If you’re looking for something a bit more fast-paced, try whitewater tubing. You can experience the excitement of class I-III rapids with your friends, and you can even stop off at the rocks in the middle of the river if you need a break. It’s the way to go if you’re wanting a great mix of thrill, fun and lasting memories!
Have you ever been whitewater rafting? If not, then you have to try it this summer! Harpers Ferry Adventure Center will provide you with different options so that you can choose the rapids that you feel comfortable with, and of course you’ll be accompanied by a guide the entire time. Whitewater rafting is an experience like no other! Everyone gets to participate by rowing their own oar and learning general techniques from the pros. Racing down through rocks, splashing into the water, bouncing around in the boat – it’s truly a unique experience that we think everyone will love!
Want the thrill of whitewater rafting but on a bit of a different scale? Try whitewater kayaking! It is more challenging and will test you physically, but it is a ton of fun! Kayak down a 7-mile stretch, making your way through the rock formations and raging water, all on a single-man kayak or duckie (a sit-on-top, inflatable kayak).
Looking for something more low-key to enjoy in the morning or on a weekday? Kayaking and canoeing are awesome options! If you go at times when it’s not as crowded, you can enjoy optimal relaxation and you can go at your own pace. Be sure to keep an eye out for the incredible wildlife – you could see great blue herons, turtles, osprey, and more!
Remember, summertime doesn’t have to mean packed beaches and pools. The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers offer one-of-a-kind scenery, wildlife, and water sports that you can enjoy all summer long! Harpers Ferry Adventure Center will be sure to make your time the best it can be while you enjoy a day on the river!
