If you’re like me, you fully indulge on Thanksgiving Day. You satiate yourself with green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, buttered-up rolls, sweet potatoes, pie, and of course, turkey. If you’re even more like me, you love the food, but you start to regret it a little bit as you’re lying on the couch, stuffed to the brim. It happens every year, right?
To help yourself feel better about the incredible indulgence, one solution is to sign up for a run! There are so many turkey trots and other holiday runs that take place throughout November and December, and by participating in one, you can rest assured that your Thanksgiving Day meal was totally worth it!
Starting on November 18th, races around the area will begin! The Berryville Turkey Trot races take place at Clarke County High School starting at 10:00 am. Registration is from 8:30 am to 9:15 am. It is the 39th edition of this race, and all runners, joggers, and walkers are welcome to participate!
If you’re looking for a run around the Fairfax area, you could participate in the Turkey Trot 5k Run at the Herndon Community Center on November 18th. You can register beforehand online, and a can of food for donation is required with the registration. The overall male and female winners will win a turkey – the perfect Turkey Trot prize!!
Of course we can’t forget about all that’s happening on Thanksgiving Day! Right on Main Street in Harrisonburg is where the Rocktown Turkey Trot & Gobble Gobble Kids Dash will be held. Whether you’re a professional or a first-timer, you’re encouraged to come dressed up in your favorite Thanksgiving-themed running gear! The Gobble Gobble Kids Dash is going to be tons of fun for the little ones!
Also, the 6th Annual Lexington Gobble Wobble 5k & Fun Run will start at 8:30 am on Thanksgiving Day. It’s at Maury River Middle School in Lexington, VA. The run (or walk, or jog) benefits the Lexington-Rockbridge Area YMCA, Lexington-Rockbridge Health Center, and the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce. This link will provide you all the information about registration and fees.
These turkey trots are such a fun way to add something new to your Thanksgiving traditions list! Most of these are open to the entire family, and by donating a can of food when you register, you are truly helping people who need it most. What a great way to get the kids out and learning about helping others and being thankful! There are tons of runs going on, and you can keep up to date with them by “liking” our Facebook page here.
