Turkey Trot

If you’re like me, you fully indulge on Thanksgiving Day. You satiate yourself with green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, buttered-up rolls, sweet potatoes, pie, and of course, turkey. If you’re even more like me, you love the food, but you start to regret it a little bit as you’re lying on the couch, stuffed to the brim.  It happens every year, right?

To help yourself feel better about the incredible indulgence, one solution is to sign up for a run! Thereturkey trot runners are so many turkey trots and other holiday runs that take place throughout November and December, and by participating in one, you can rest assured that your Thanksgiving Day meal was totally worth it!

Starting on November 19th, races around the area will begin! The Berryville Turkey Trot races take place at Clarke County High School starting at 10:00 am. Registration is from 8:30 am to 9:15 am.  It is the 38th edition of this race, and all runners, joggers, and walkers are welcome to participate!

Also on the 19th is Run, Sweat & Beers, hosted at Winchester Brew Works.  They ask that you please bring a canned good donation to participate in the run; it will go towards a family who needs it. Strollers and leashed pets are all welcome, so bring the whole family along! Whichever course you choose – the 1 mile, 3 mile, or 5 mile – they all end with discounted brews in the tasting room.  You do not have to pre-register. (They are also hosting the event in Harrisonburg! Check it out here)

The overall male and female winners will win a turkey – the perfect Turkey Trot prize!!

On Sunday, November 20th, The Devils Backbone Brewing Company is having their Party 4 The Pantry and Gobble ‘n Go 5k. The proceeds will go directly to the Pantry to support the residents of Nelson County during the Thanksgiving season. Register in advance by calling (434)-361-1001.

Of course we can’t forget about all that’s happening on Thanksgiving Day! Right on Main Street in Harrisonburg is where the Rocktown Turkey Trot & Gobble Gobble Kids Dash will be held. Whether you’re a professional or a first-timer, you’re encouraged to come dressed up in your favorite Thanksgiving-themed running gear! The Gobble Gobble Kids Dash is going to be tons of fun for the little ones!

Also, the 5th Annual Lexington Gobble Wobble 5k & Fun Run will start at 8:30 am on Thanksgiving Day. It’s at Maury River Middle School in Lexington, VA. The run (or walk, or jog) benefits the Lexington-Rockbridge Area YMCA, Lexington-Rockbridge Health Center, and the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce. This link will provide you all the information about registration and fees.

Most of these are open to the entire family, and by donating a can of food when you register, you are truly helping people who need it most. What a great way to get the kids out and learning about helping others and being thankful!  There are tons of runs going on, and you can keep up to date with them by “liking” our Facebook page here.
