The gateway to this playground is through Harpers Ferry where North and South rubbed together and sparked the Civil War.  Study all of the complexities of that conflict there and in Charles Town where John Brown was tried and hung.  Lest you think history of this area started with the war between the states, note that George Washington settled his extended family here leaving seven family homes to grace the lush country side and his name on a street in almost every small town.
